IEED features in Ingenious Britain supplement

21 November 2012

Lancaster University Management School has recently featured in the 'Ingenious Britain' supplement, which was included with the Sunday Telegraph.

What is Ingenious Britain?

Introduced by The Prime Minister David Cameron, Ingenious Britain is a campaign to understand the needs of SMEs and focus on them. LUMS features on the website and supplement within the Sunday Telegraph. It is designed to help and support SMEs by providing and sharing information and ensuring that SMEs are recognised for the value they bring.

The article outlines how LUMS has decades of research experience which has helped to shape policy and create growth in the SME sector. This has been done through interaction with SMEs and through specialist programmes at Lancaster University Management School, and thus has created a dialogue with the wider SME community.

Dr Cathy Garner, a member of the Lancaster University Management School Advisory Board, said: “We need to recognise that when new companies start to grow they need new support, new skills and they need to adapt not just through finance but through skills.”

This is an area in which Lancaster University Management School has been working for over ten years, and has so far been remarkably successful.

Dr Ellie Hamilton, Associate Dean for Enterprise, Engagement and Impact at LUMS, highlighted how LEAD, a programme founded and delivered by IEED and based on Lancaster's integrated learning model, integrates teaching with practice.

“Early research in entrepreneurial learning was suggesting that entrepreneurs learn through doing.” She said that peer-to-peer networks were found to be an important element in the learning process.

By engaging with and supporting SMEs, Lancaster University Management School has become a hub for business development in the UK and has a strong local knowledge base which is now being shared on a national and international scale.
